WHY DO I NEED MORE INSULATION?

Homes with the right amount of insulation will help keep you warm and cozy on the coldest winter nights and cool on those blistering hot summer days. It can also help lower your energy bills and help save the environment’s precious energy resources.
WHAT IS INSULATION AND HOW DOES IT WORK
Insulation is a material used to fill the spaces and gaps in your home so heat doesn’t enter your cooler home in the summer and escape your warm home in the winter. Regardless of the insulation type (fiberglass, foam insulation, insulating radiant barrier and cellulose insulation), all insulation is measured in R-values. The higher the R-value, the more resistant the insulation is to heat flow.
HOW DO I FIGURE OUT IF I NEED MORE INSULATION IN
MY HOME?

This can be difficult to figure out without professional help. Most homeowners do not have the tools and expertise to assess their home’s insulation needs. As a rule of thumb, a lot of older homes do not meet the U.S. Department of Energy’s latest insulation standards*. And homes with complex designs are often under-insulated and improperly sealed.
The easiest way to find out if your home needs more insulation is to have a FREE Home Insulation Assessment performed by one of our insulation experts.
We will:
- Thoroughly evaluate your current insulation levels in your home
- Identify areas in your home where energy is being lost
- Advise you on which insulation products can be added to make your home more comfortable, and save on energy costs

HOW DO I DETERMINE HOW MUCH INSULATION IS CURRENTLY IN MY HOME?

Most people do not have the tools and expertise to assess their home’s insulation needs. The easiest way to find out your home’s insulation levels is to schedule an insulation evaluation with one of our expert professionals. The professionals at Save With Insulation come to your home to thoroughly evaluate whether or not it is sufficiently insulated and will advise you on the next steps to take for making your home more energy efficient.
WHAT AREAS OF MY HOUSE NEED MORE INSULATION?
Typically, there are four areas of your home that may require additional insulation: attic, walls, basement and crawlspace. These places are often under insulated and allow the heated or cooled air from inside your home to escape.
HOW DOES HEAT GET INTO AND OUT OF MY HOME?
Conduction is the flow of heat or energy through materials, like wood framing or other building components. Adding insulation to your home helps these materials raise their R-values which makes it much more difficult for heat to transfer to cooler areas (air conditioned home in the summer and cooler air outside in the winter).
Convection is when the flow of heat escapes as gases or liquids. When we remove the lid from a pot of boiling water, the steam is an example of heat loss. In your home, heat is lost through many gaps, leaks and cracks. Unless the openings are properly sealed, hot air can flow into and out of your home that can be costly and inefficient.
Radiant Heat is heat that travels in waves or rays, like the heat we feel when standing too close to a campfire. Your roof absorbs the radiant heat from the sun causing your home to heat up very quickly. Proper insulation, like a radiant barrier, helps prevent that heat from entering the cooler living spaces of your home. Without something to block the heat absorbed by your attic through the roof, the heat gets transferred (radiated) to the attic insulation and consequently, through the ceiling and warming the rest of the house.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT THAT MY ATTIC IS PROPERLY VENTILATED?
During the winter, it is important to keep the attic cooler so that ice and snow on the roof does not melt and then re-freeze. This refreezing can cause problems with or damage the gutters and roof. In the summer, air should flow freely into and out of the attic so that the air inside the attic stays cooler. The EPA recommends keeping a natural flow of air through your attic at all times throughout the year to prevent problems from occurring. Proper insulation and air sealing will also keep unwanted air from escaping into the living spaces below and affecting you and your family.
